This standard for four-wheel all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) is the third revision of the ATV industry voluntary standard and has been developed by members of the Canadian Off-High Vehicle Distributors Council (COHV), formerly called the Canadian All-Terrain Vehicle Distributors Council (CATV). The CATV 1-2003 adopted the ANSI/SVIA 1-2001 by reference and also specified labeling requirements and owner’s manual The revised ANSI/SVIA 1-2007 addresses design, configuration and performance aspects of ATVs, including, among other items, requirements for mechanical suspension; throttle, clutch and gearshift controls; engine and fuel cutoff devices; lighting; tires; operator foot environment; service and parking brake/parking mechanism performance; and pitch stability. It also covers some new areas, including

  1. definition of Type I and Type II ATVs,
  2. new Y10+ and T category ATVs;
  3. requirements for Type II ATV passenger handholds and footrests;
  4. labels
  5. owner’s manuals,
  6. hang tags, and a
  7. compliance certification label

The COHV and its member companies have agreed to fully adopt the new standard by reference with the exception of that stated in section 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 of this standard.
